Biomedical & Clinical Engineering Association of Ireland

Sub-Committees

From Spectrum November 1996

Training

This sub-committee is working towards a proposal for practical implementation of the draft proposals presented at the ACM. Implementation within the professional structure is under discussion.

Education

This group continues to obtain feedback on the draft proposal for the degree course under development at Tallaght RTC. We are also in the process of compiling letters of support from representatives of industry who will be potential employers of graduates of the course. Feedback to date has been positive and constructive. It is extremely doubtful, however, that the course will commence in January, 1997 as we had hoped. Eamon O'Callanain has made some proposals as to possible structuring of hours on the course, which as most of you know will be on a part-time basis and is particularly aimed at those who have already attained a diploma in a relevant area. Eamon's proposals will be discussed at a forthcoming meeting, date to be announced.

Constitutional / Professional Sub-Committee

This group continues to address issues raised at the ACM and to investigate affiliation with various umbrella organisations.

Scientific Sub-Committee

The Scientific Sub-committee of the BEAI has already, in this BEAI year, set up a joint meeting with the APSM, where Mr Bruce Gran of Richardson Electronics presented the scenario of life without the Original Equipment Manufacturer in equipment support. This presentation is dis cussed elsewhere in The Spectrum. This group has begun to plan several events which will be happening over the next eight months - more details in our next issue.

IT/Communications

This group, led jointly by Tony Enright, Beaumont Hospital and Tom Larkin, Adelaide Hospital has great potential and will be very important for the Association as a whole. Currently, developments are at the planning stage.

Safety/Hazards

This group is born of necessity. Legislation, Directives, Recommendations are ubiquitous. As a profession we need a structured approach to building a library of documentation relevant to these subjects, and a method of dissemination of information. The convener of this group, Pat O'Rourke, has set wheels in motion to achieve this aim. We expect to have a protocol for acquisition and dissemination of information in the near future.
