EDITORIAL
From the Convenor
On behalf of the BEAI, I would like to thank all that participated in the resurrection of the
Spectrum (You know who you are). I would like to particularly thank those who have taken the time
to write such fine articles, to which I am sure the reader will agree, are of the highest quality.
Thanking you for your time and patience
Cathal Gallagher
Spectrum Convenor
The executive committee of The Biomedical Engineering Association of Ireland (BEAI) have
worked arduously on behalf of the membership, in particular with regard to the establishment of
Clinical Engineering as a degree based profession and also to our affiliation to the International
Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE). This affiliation was attained at the
World Congress, which took place in Chicago, USA. Members are drawn from the Clinical
Engineering profession in hospitals, biomedical engineers in industry, associates in industry, academic
institutions, and corporate members. At present Clinical Engineering is the only paramedical
grade in the hospital sector that does not have a degree entry level.
Renew your membership
With the professionalization now near completion I would encourage those who were members in
the past to re-apply and renew your membership with the BEAI. We will be in touch over the next
few months to encourage this and to explain how membership of the Institution of Engineers of
Ireland (IEI) may be attained. These are exciting times for the profession and with us all working
towards the same goals.
